Oxford defines the verb "to inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device." It was added to the dictionary in August. "Vape" can also be used as a noun meaning the actual device used for vaping, also known as an e-cigarette.
According to research conducted by Oxford Dictionaries editors, the use of the term more than doubled in 2014 over the previous year. "You are thirty times more likely to come across the word 'vape' than you were two years ago," Oxford explained on the OxfordWords blog announcing the decision. In a news release, Oxford added, "A gap emerged in the lexicon, as a word was needed to describe the activity, and distinguish it from 'smoking.' The word 'vape' arose to fill this gap and it has proliferated along with the habit."
