(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/22/11 -- Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison assumed the duties of Commander of Maritime Command from Vice-Admiral Dean McFadden this morning at Carling Place in a formal ceremony presided over by General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff.

"During his two-year tenure, Vice-Admiral McFadden significantly improved the Navy's profile here in Canada and around the world," said General Natynczyk. "He has been a tireless leader who has worked hard with his team to ensure the Navy remains an agile and capable force. To his successor, Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison, I offer my congratulations as he takes command of the Maritime Staff. I know he will continue the work that is required to shape Canada's Navy of the future."

"It has been a tremendous honour commanding the Navy, charting a course for our great organization into its second century of service to Canada," said Vice-Admiral McFadden. "As I move on from this post, I am certain that I am turning over the watch to an officer who is, without a doubt, an exceptional and remarkable leader, more than ready for this appointment."

"I consider it an honour to take command of the Canadian Navy, relieving Vice-Admiral McFadden after two years under his adept leadership," stated Vice-Admiral Maddison. "Under his Command, the navy continued to succeed in achieving its mission, providing world class service to Canada as a globally-deployable sea control navy. It's with a great deal of anticipation that I will use this momentum to continue building the navy of tomorrow and informing Canadians about the role of their navy."

Following nearly 37 years of distinguished and dedicated service, Vice-Admiral McFadden will retire from the Canadian Forces. He served in a variety of key positions throughout his career, including Commander of Canada Command, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic/Joint Task Force (Atlantic), Commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, Commanding Officer of HMCS Montreal, Sea Training (Atlantic), and Maritime Operations Group 5 (MAROPSGRU 5). He also led a joint/inter-agency Task Group, comprised of army, air force, navy and Coast Guard elements, in support of the disaster relief mission to US Gulf States in the wake of hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Chief of the Maritime Staff is responsible for leading the strategic development and generation of combat capable, multi-purpose maritime forces and for providing advice in support of Maritime operations.
