(firmenpresse) - GATINEAU, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 02/16/15 -- The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), congratulates Dylan Armstrong on his bronze medal in the Men's Shot Put, won at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer Games. Mr. Armstrong was presented his Olympic medal at a ceremony today in Kamloops, British Columbia, following a decision by the International Olympic Committee to impose a lifetime ban for doping on the original bronze medalist.

"On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to Dylan Armstrong on being awarded his bronze medal, six and a half years after his performance at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, China.

Dylan earned his bronze medal in the shot put event on the seventh day of competition. This is his first medal in Olympic competition, and he becomes the only Canadian ever to win a medal in the event.

Dylan Armstrong is being honoured today by his hometown of Kamloops, British Columbia. He is the reigning Pan American Games champion and a former Commonwealth Games champion and has also won world championship silver and bronze medals in shot put. He also holds the Canadian national record and the Pan American Games record in the event.

During this Year of Sport in Canada, today's awarding of Dylan's well-deserved bronze medal reminds us once again that Canada is a leading sport nation. Our Government is proud to support our athletes with the tools they need to reach the podium at every possible opportunity.

Dylan's Olympic medal also reminds us that honesty and fair play are eventually rewarded. Our athletes are a tremendous source of pride and inspiration, and they demonstrate their incredible talent, drive, determination and strength time and again in international competition."
