Mysterious 'Red Violin' Returns to Philadelphia
Internationally Acclaimed Violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn to Perform at Glencairn Museum

Pitcairn is the current owner of the ',' which was the topic of the fictionalized 1998 movie of the same name. The instrument's moniker and lore comes from its unique red stain markings, which the Academy Award-winning movie depicts as coming from human blood.
Although the movie is a piece of pure fiction, the instrument is the very real and mysterious Stradivarius . Built around 1720, the legendary violin renowned for its distinctive sound and playability went missing for 200 years. It resurfaced in Berlin in the 1930s. After a secession of owners, it landed with its current owner Elizabeth Pitcairn, who received it as a 16th birthday gift from her grandfather, Theodore Pitcairn. Theodore Pitcairn purchased the Red Mendelssohn at a auction in 1990 for $1.7 million.
Celebrated as one of America's most beloved violin soloists, Elizabeth Pitcairn has toured the world with her Red Mendelssohn. Pitcairn studied with renowned professor Robert Lipsett at University of Southern California's . As an artist and performer, she is known for musical interpretations that touch audiences on a deeply emotional level.
Pitcairn will be joined by distinguished cellist and pianist . The program will include Chaconne in G Minor for violin and piano by Vitali; Prayer for solo cello by Gregor Piatigorsky who was Drachman's grandfather, and others.
Pitcairn is president, CEO and artistic director of the , a summer camp for gifted young musicians ages 9 to 18 in the Adirondacks of New York. A Bucks County native, Pitcairn currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
Admission for Elizabeth Pitcairn in Concert is $20 for general admission, $15 for Basic Members, and free for Gold Members. Concert begins at 3 p.m., doors open at 2:30 p.m.
