DE-CIX Supports FCC's Decision on Net Neutrality
Principles of an Open and Free Internet Are Critical to Internet Health and Ubiquitous Access
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 03/05/15 -- On Thursday, February 26, 2015, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to regulate broadband Internet service as a public utility under Title II of the Telecommunications Act of 1934. DE-CIX announces its strong support for this decision, as it delivers ongoing protection of "Net Neutrality" in the United States.
Under Title II, the Internet will now be regulated as a telecommunications service rather than an information service, bringing with it provisions that prohibit content blocking and traffic prioritization. Net Neutrality under the FCC's ruling requires all data packets that cross the Internet to be treated the same, no matter the content contained in them.
This model of an open Internet is one that DE-CIX has long supported during its 20-year existence. Supporters of Net Neutrality were thrilled with the FCC's decision last week, citing its goal of providing an open and free Internet for all. Critics, however, claim the ruling to be a step backwards. Most industry observers expect the ruling to be further fought through in the courts, a process that will take years to play out.
