Government of Canada Equips Over 500 Canadians in the Greater Toronto Area to Succeed in the Job Market
(firmenpresse) - MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/26/11 -- Local youth and people with disabilities who face barriers to employment will get job preparation training and work experience through the Government of Canada's support for four youth employment projects announced the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

"We want all Canadians to be ready and trained for the jobs that will be in demand, and I have found that when given the tools and opportunity to succeed, there really is no holding them back."
With assistance from the federal Skills Link program, the YMCA of Greater Toronto will help over 380 youth develop the skills and experience needed to find a job or the confidence to return to school.
The project participants will attend life and employability skills workshops that focus on topics such as resume writing, problem solving and teamwork. Based on their needs and interests, the participants will then either be matched with employers, who will provide them with hands-on experience through work placements, or they will launch their own businesses.
Additionally, thanks to support from the federal Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities, the YMCA of Greater Toronto will help 120 people with disabilities prepare for, obtain and maintain employment.
The YMCA of Greater Toronto will receive over $2 million in federal Skills Link funding to support its three youth employment projects and over $234,000 under the Enhanced Employment Assistance Services component of the Opportunities Fund.

Backgrounder
As part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy, the Skills Link program is one of three programs that help young Canadians, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop skills, gain work experience, find good jobs and stay employed. The other two programs are Summer Work Experience and Career Focus.
Skills Link helps youth between 15 and 30 years of age who are not receiving Employment Insurance benefits develop basic and advanced employment skills. It assists participants through a coordinated, client-centred approach that offers longer-term supports and services tailored to their specific needs to help them find and keep a job.
The Government of Canada is committed to breaking down barriers that prevent Canadians with disabilities from reaching their full potential with a wide range of effective policies, programs and services.
The Enhanced Employment Assistance Services component of Opportunities Fund is designed to help Canadians with disabilities who have little or no work experience, and who are not eligible for Employment Insurance benefits. The Fund is available to eligible organizations to deliver employment-related programs and services to people with disabilities to help them integrate into the workplace.
Employment programs are also part of the Government of Canada's strategy to create the best educated, most skilled and most flexible workforce in the world. The Government underscored its commitment to this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan.
