(firmenpresse) - PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/09/15 -- Over 12,000 people are expected to raise more than $2 million to support cutting-edge research and life-changing programs and services for people living with MS at Walk MS 2015, hosted by the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Each spring, the local MS community joins together at Walk MS to raise funds and awareness so we can move closer to a world free of MS.

The first Walk MS event of the season will be held on Saturday, April 11, and events will continue through Friday, May 29 at 20 different locations throughout our region. Sites vary in walk lengths and scenic routes, and all of our Walk MS routes are 100% handicap accessible so no matter your physical ability, you too can participate in the celebration of thousands joining together to fight MS. And, as a truly family friendly event, Walk MS 2015 has something for everyone.

"Walk MS is a time for the local MS community to come together, rally around the cause and raise funds for local people living with MS," said Tami Caesar, president of the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the National MS Society. Walk MS participants are welcome to register as an individual walker or collectively as a team. There is no fee to participate in Walk MS; however, fundraising is essential for the event to be a success. The average Walk MS participant raises upwards of $250 but any donation makes a difference.

The Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. In 2014, the Society invested $50.6 million to advance more than 380 research projects around the world in order to stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. Through its comprehensive nation-wide network of programs and services, it also helped more than one million people affected by MS connect to the people, information and resources needed to live their best lives.

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
