CMHC President Evan Siddall Talks "Why Housing Matters" To CHRA Conference in Winnipeg

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/29/15 -- Evan Siddall, President and CEO of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), spoke today at the opening ceremonies of the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) 47th National Congress on Housing and Homelessness in Winnipeg.

In his speech, Siddall explained to delegates the importance of reflecting on "why housing matters" and how it can be an effective tool to achieve broader social and economic policy objectives.

He spoke about the linkages between stable, affordable housing and improved education and employment outcomes. Siddall also spoke about the importance of partnerships, with provinces, territories and organizations like CHRA, in helping support low-income households and others who need access to affordable housing.

"Just as CMHC is greater than the sum of its parts, the same can be said of Canada's housing system. CMHC works in close collaboration with the provinces, territories and affordable housing organizations across the country to help Canadians address their housing needs through both the ownership and rental markets," he said. "Working together, we achieve far more than we could in isolation."

Siddall explained how housing matters to Canada's broader economic and financial stability: "in fact, stable housing goes hand-in-hand with a stable financial system," he said.

Siddall further elaborated on CMHC's core objectives, which aim to contribute to the stability of the housing market and financial system and reduce taxpayers' exposure to risk: "We need to be purposeful about where a Crown corporation can help, and where we should leave the market alone to adjust. We also need to avoid activities that exacerbate problems, adding to financial instability or compounding affordability problems by stoking demand," he added.

As Canada's authority on housing, CMHC contributes to the stability of the housing market and financial system, provides support for Canadians in housing need, and offers objective housing research and advice to Canadian governments, consumers and the housing industry.
