A Just-Published Book Puts God on Trial

Roller addresses the eternal question, "If God is good and all-powerful, how come there is so much evil?" In a collection of short poems, Roller contemplates celestial puzzles ranging from the destruction of the biblical Uzza for trying to protect the Ark of the Covenant (1 Chronicles) to possible ironies of the Resurrection, to the horrors of the Holocaust, to the wars and crimes that have haunted the human race since its beginnings.
Roller addresses the seeming silence of the Deity, the doubts of scientists, the denials of atheists, the value of faith, and whether, in the grand scheme of things, humanity really matters.
Roller feels the book will be valuable to those who speak to a congregation on a daily or weekly basis. It presents a point of view that is strong and challenging. The Ash and the Thorn would fit proudly in any religious and non religious person's book shelf, perhaps even Pope Francis.
An avid mountain climber, Roller traces the inspiration for this book to the moment he stood on the summit of Switzerland's Matterhorn peak, marveling at the beauty and majesty of the sky and the surrounding pinnacles, "As close to God as I could get." He wondered how such beauty could co-exist with the evils of the world. At another time, as a soldier crawling through the mud of an infiltration course with machine gun bullets whizzing over his head, he wondered, "Is the world going to hell in a hand basket?"
Roller is a poet, author, educator, and lecturer. He has a Bachelor's Degree in English and Journalism from New York University and a Master's Degree in Comparative Literature from Columbia University. His work has been widely published.
