When the earthquake struck Nepal on 25th April, the young mountaineer and climber Jost Kobusch (22) was being on his expedition to Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world. His video of the avalanche hitting the Everest Base Camp has made him known all over the world and has been watched by more than 22 million people so far.
In the run-up of his expedition, Jost prepared carefully, conducted physical training and put a lot of thought into the choice of his equipment. On part of his gear was the famous “beeper”: a SPOT Gen3 device.

(firmenpresse) - When the earthquake struck Nepal on 25th April, the young mountaineer and climber Jost Kobusch (22) was being on his expedition to Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world.

SPOT Gen3 is a satellite messenger that allows the user to send messages to friends and family, to share the current GPS location in almost real time via its tracking function and send a SOS signal to emergency responders. Thanks to 100% satellite technology, SPOT Gen3 even works beyond cell service.

Jost’s video was proof that he had survived the avalanche unharmed. While everybody thought the video was the first signal of Jost’s survival, he used his SPOT Gen3 right after the avalanche to send a text message including his current GPS location to his parents, saying “I’m fine. Everything is alright.” They received the text even before they knew what had happened.

“From now on, the SPOT is fix part of my equipment. It is kind of a cell phone replacement for extreme situations”, he said when we talked to him. The great advantage Jost sees in his SPOT Gen3 is that by pressing just one button he can reach many people or can call for help, without having to actually type a message and send it to every person individually.

Since he was young, Jost has loved the mountains. His plan to climb Lhotse solo and without additional oxygen would have been another milestone in his career as a mountaineer, but due to the earthquake his expedition came to a sudden end. Even though the Lhotse plan is still up, Jost is now focussing on other projects. Jost has just returned to Nepal where he supports rebuilding activities and fundraising campaigns. Afterwards he will fly to Kirgizstan for another project he initiated with his friends: the “climb for life” project. The team wants to establish training routes, conquer an untouched summit, train guides and provide climbing equipment. With “climb for life” they want to establish the small village Arslandbob as a destination for climbers and mountaineers and sustainably create additional income sources for the local people.

Naturally, Jost carries his SPOT Gen3 with him and thanks to GPS LIVE TRACKING Jost’s adventures can be followed live on his blog.
