Staff at Canada's Largest Union Vote 87% in Favour of Strike Action

ID: 40482

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/02/11 -- Members of the Canadian Staff Union (CSU) - who work for Canada's largest union, CUPE - have themselves voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

More than 400 members of the Canadian Staff Union/Syndicat canadien du personnel have voted 87% in favour of job action in support of their Bargaining Committee's position in contract talks with the National Officers of CUPE.

CSU President Peter Paulekat says, "These vote results will send a clear message to our employer that it is time for them to take us seriously and recognize that their bargaining tactics thus far have, if anything, made us more united and resolute."

The CUPE employees have been without a contract since December 31, 2009.

Says Paulekat, "This round of bargaining, unfortunately, has been characterized by several demands for concessions from this employer. As we routinely argue with employers across the country on behalf of the CUPE members we represent, people do not join unions to move backwards. CSU staff are not prepared to give up provisions in our contract that we have fought long and hard for."

The 425 employees make up the largest group of CUPE staff, consisting of Servicing and Specialist Representatives in every province except Quebec, as well as administrative and technical staff at the union's head office in Ottawa.

The parties bargain under Ontario labour laws and are currently in the conciliation stage. Conciliation is a process whereby a Conciliation Officer is appointed by the Ministry of Labour in an effort to assist the parties in reaching a settlement.

"Following this strong strike mandate, we have asked the employer to return to the bargaining table so that we can resolve the outstanding issues that stand in the way of a settlement," says Paulekat.
