Silicon Valley 3PL Launches Program to Provide Options for HS Grads, Program Will Certify Critical Warehouse Logistics Skills on Completion
(firmenpresse) - FREMONT, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/19/15 -- RK Group, recently recognized as a Top Business by the City of Livermore, announced this week that it has hired the first class of participants in its innovative Vocational Apprenticeship Program. Judi Kalune of RK Group, who is spearheading the initiative for the growing third party logistics provider known as the 'Best Logistics Partner for Silicon Valley,' launched exploratory talks with several Livermore, CA High Schools in May of this year, and has received strong support from the academic community.
"We chose to partner with Livermore area High Schools for several reasons: first, most of our employees live in this area and second, our Livermore facility is an excellent location for the pilot program, because within that facility are eight or nine distinctly different work areas, which can be viewed as separate job sites, for separate skills development and work experiences over time," explains Kalune. "RK Group apprentices will be assisting with tasks over time, and depending on the individual's aptitude and abilities, from 'picking' to inventory control management, clean room management of parts inventory and preparation, moving finished goods products, and shipping. They'll benefit from exposure to multiple aspects of the operation."
Mrs. Kalune's team has done its research in developing the approach and structure of apprenticeships, to ensure it would resonate with the targeted millennial high school graduates. Recognizing that an early shift and a long day would be less attractive to the 18-24 year age group, the company has structured its apprenticeships as four-hour shifts, from 10:00am - 2:00pm or from 2:00-6:00pm.
"We want to help them succeed. Our goal is to create more career path options, maybe for people that might need extra support at this juncture," says Judi Kalune. "And if they decide to go on to college after our program, all the better! We would welcome them during breaks, summers, or weekends during school. You help people become the best they can be, and who knows? RK Group might ultimately enjoy a returning warehouse supervisor, trainer for this program or future manager."
