As the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks approaches, ground-breaking research on search-and-rescue dogs deployed during those rescue and recovery efforts will be highlighted during the 2011 National Parent Club Canine Health Conference, hosted by the AKC Canine Health Foundation and sponsored by St. Louis-based Nestlé Purina PetCare Company.
A number of search-and-rescue dog teams from the greater St. Louis area participated in the Sept. 11 rescue and recovery efforts and were also included in the multiyear research project, which examined the long-term health of dogs that were exposed to the adverse conditions.
The research revealed very few search-and-rescue dogs developed any respiratory conditions, whereas numerous human responders in the Sept. 11 aftermath have been plagued with chronic respiratory ailments.
Because the canine and human genomes are similar and most canine diseases also occur in humans, future research could center on learning why the search-and-rescue dogs were able to endure the challenging conditions with minimal respiratory complications. Identifying respiratory genetic markers in canines could lead to the development of treatments of respiratory ailments in humans.
