Media Advisory/Message of Monday afternoon demonstration at U of T: Embrace feminism to combat gendered violence

ID: 419660

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/13/15 -- Following vicious online threats made against women and feminists at the University of Toronto, the Women's Caucus of Local 3902 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3902) is holding a demonstration to denounce gendered violence.

The demonstration will take place Monday September 14 at 1 pm outside the Department of Sociology, located at 725 Spadina Ave, on the southeast corner of Bloor and Spadina.

The threats made in June and September were towards women in the departments of Sociology and Women & Gender Studies.

"This violence targets our entire community, not just two departments, and not only women," said Joe Curnow, a member of CUPE 3902 and co-organiser of the demonstration. "U of T is a feminist community. Misogynist ideas expressed in these threats are extreme and have no place on our campus," she added.

Monday's demonstration will highlight the power of feminism and feminist ideas. These include women's right to education and work without fear.

Media wishing to cover the demonstration are encouraged to contact CUPE 3902 executive member Pamela Arancibia, or Kevin Wilson, CUPE Communications. Their contact information is listed at the bottom of this media advisory.
