Many of us in the DevOps world are familiar with the pets-versus-cattle metaphor when talking about virtual machines (VMs). Cattle VMs are all alike and easily replaced when they stop working, while pet VMs are customized to run specific workloads, and we work to restore them to health when they go down. Unfortunately, failures happen -- often at the worst times. Because networks are not disposable, you can't just spin up new virtual routers and toss them if they're misbehaving. However, you can use overlays to simulate failures much more easily with APIs. This session will discuss the pet and cattle strategies in networking so you can keep your workloads up and running.
