Kendrion electromagnetic fan clutches offer varying cooling capacities, reduced fuel consumption

(firmenpresse) - Kendrion, a manufacturer of electromechanical clutch systems for engine cooling and air-conditioning systems for Commercial vehicles, has introduced its electromagnetic fan clutches for use in industrial engine applications. With the clutches, Kendrion offers an alternative to constant speed-driven fans, which are often used in industrial machinery as well as stationary applications such as gensets, air compressors and hydraulic-driven applications.

In these applications, circuits such as the cooling system are often directly driven by the engine using continuous speed and providing the same quantity of air cooling. Kendrion said the design of a cooling system needs to take into consideration several parameters, as a system is often overated for the application — providing a higher cooling performance than is needed.

Marco Kiene, Business Development Manager at Kendrion, said such high energy consumption for cooling purposes can be reduced with a variable speed fan approach.
“Our company offers several systems in engine fan cooling. One-speed, two and
three-speed clutch systems are available for any application need. “The one-speed system works with the on/off principle, whereas with two and three-speed clutch systems, we can realize different reduction ratios to fulfill the customer and application needs in terms of rotating speed and cooling capacity.”

“In these electromagnetic clutches, the ratio reduction is obtained by an eddy current system, realized by permanent magnets.” According to Kiene, an electromagnetic fan clutch can be controlled for one- and two speed systems using only one signal, while three-speed systems need two signals. The control can be performed directly by the engine control unit or with a completely independent System supplied by Kendrion.

“The clutch control via a temperature sensor in the cooling water circuit is simple and economic, but we also offer more sophisticated systems where the clutch is activated according to several parameters, such as the temperature of the cooling water, of the oil and of the charge-air,” Kiene said. In order to ready the clutch Systems for industrial applications, Kendrion carried out a testing in cooperation with Zeppelin Power Systems, a distributor of Caterpillar and MaK in Germany. The test evaluated the Performance of its two-speed fan clutch versus a constant-speed unit, both installed in a drilling machine equipped with a Cat C15 engine, delivering 354 kW output power. Because the machine’s drilling functions are operated hydraulically, the engine drives a hydraulic pump, requiring 90% operation time at constant low engine speed. The cooling needs varied depending on the engine speed and the ambient conditions. The drilling machine was observed in the operation with both devices, and several measurements were taken for comparison purposes, such as fuel consumption and temperature of cooling water and charge-air.

“With an engine speed of 1850 r/min and a fan coupling ratio of 0.681, the fan has a speed of 1260 r/min and its energy absorption is about 30 kW,” said Kiene. “With a reduced fan Speed to 600 r/min, the energy consumption drops considerably to 5.5 kW.
“Without a fan clutch, 139 hours of machine operation consumed 2380 L of diesel fuel for an average consumption of 17.12 L/hr. After the Installation of the Kendrion clutch, the machine was operated for 1489 hours and we registered a fuel average consumption
of 16.11 L/hr. “The reduced fuel consumption and consequently reduced exhaust emissions go hand in hand with the possibility of maintaining an optimal engine
operational temperature,” said Kiene.

“At the same time, the reduced speed of the fan translates into reduced noise emissions. Moreover, in the engine cold-start phase, a lower cooling of the charge-air helps reduce the Formation of exhaust smoke.” Kiene confirmed that the clutches by Kendrion can be utilized with virtually any fan and are extremely flexible. They can be installed with industrial engines up to 2000 kW and can be mounted in various configurations
such as at the water pump, crankshaft or in a separate mounting position.
They can also be pneumatically or hydraulically activated, Kiene said.
