Pioneering wind observing system to be installed in the USA
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Wind energy production to benefit from increased predictabilityThe world leader in environmental measurement, Vaisala, together withelectricity and natural gas energy company, Xcel Energy, and theNational Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) have joined forces ona pioneering pilot project in the USA that will take observing andforecasting for wind energy production to the next level. The goal of the pilot is to explore the use of a new wind observingand forecasting system in Xcel Energy's wind power generation. Thesystem will provide critical decision-making support for balancingwind power with traditional fossil fuel generation while minimizingcosts and improving reliability. A primary focus of the effort is todevelop technologies that will better anticipate changes in windenergy output from wind farms."This is a great opportunity for Vaisala to again demonstrate how wecan provide observation systems for weather critical applications,"says Richard Pyle, head of Vaisala's Wind Energy Market Segment."We are extremely pleased to enter this pilot project with Vaisalaand NCAR who both are leading players in their fields and cansignificantly contribute to the development of wind forecasting inenergy production," says Mary Fisher, vice president of strategictechnology for Xcel Energy. "Once completed, the pilot, ifsuccessful, will inform wind farms operators on the means to increasereliability and minimize integration cost."Network operational in the fallVaisala is providing Xcel Energy with surface weather stations, radarwind profiling capability, National Lightning Detection Network®data, as well as installation and operating services for a 12-monthpilot program. The wind observation network will be located aroundwind farms in Colorado that total 400 megawatts of installedcapacity. The network will become operational in November 2009.NCAR has been contracted to refine a wind forecasting system thatfocuses on wind ramp detection for the project. Vaisala's observationdata will be integrated with the forecast information in a decisionsupport tool developed by Vaisala in close cooperation with the threeparties. For further information, please contact:Richard Pyle, Market Segment Manager, Wind Energy, Vaisala+1 303 589 8772, richard.pyle(at)vaisala.comAbout VaisalaVaisala is a global leader in environmental and industrialmeasurement.
