PE International supports "Bayer Climate Check" - Bayer launches corporate-wide climate program

ID: 448

(firmenpresse) - Leverkusen/Leinfelden-Echterdingen, 26 November 2007. Bayer has launched a corporate-wide "Climate Program" to reduce its CO2 emissions in in-house production even further and develop new solutions for climate protection and preparations for climate change. One project is the "Bayer Climate Check" for production processes.

"One essential way of reaching the CO2 reduction targets we have set for ourselves is the 'Bayer Climate Check' developed by Bayer Technology Services", Werner Wenning, board chairman at Bayer AG, told some 100 international journalists.

For the first time, the "Bayer Climate Check" will not only be used to assess production systems, but also for the raw materials and energy used for production and the entire logistics chain up to the grounds of the plant.

A new key performance indicator called the "Climate Footprint" will be used to assess factors relative to the climate. In addition to established economic parameters, this Climate Footprint provides an ecological parameter as a basis for decisions related to production processes, investments, and technology projects.

Sustainability specialist PE International's "GaBi" software solution is being used toward this end as an intelligent, flexible model of data analysis and interpretation. In addition, PE International is providing database systems for chemical primary products, transport, and the composition of electricity in numerous countries.

"This unique system allows detrimental effects on the climate to be detected all along the value chain", explains Wolfram Scharnhorst, project manager at PE International. But the system also requires high-quality consulting based on sound scientific methods, which must be completely objective and verifiable.

As soon as the spring of 2008, the solution is to be certified for "Bayer Climate Check" by TÜV Süd, a global leader in climate protection reports.

By the end of 2009, Bayer plans to have systematically analyzed 100 production systems worldwide that are responsible for some 85 percent of the firm's greenhouse gas emissions in order to identify potential for emission reductions.
