(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 02/03/16 -- "The recent announcement that Duncan Hawthorne plans to retire this year was bittersweet news to the Building Trades workforce," said Patrick Dillon, Business Manager of the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario. "Through his open and attentive style of leadership, Duncan steered Bruce Power as President and CEO always with a view to cultivating the esteem and co-operation of nuclear industry partners, including contractors, engineers, and construction workers," commented Dillon.

Mr. Hawthorne will stay on in his position until his replacement is hired later this year. News of his retirement comes after the December 2015 conclusion of an amended agreement between Bruce Power and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to extend the life of the facility to 2064 through a multi-year life extension program. In September 2015, the Building Trades Council signed a Collaboration Agreement with Bruce Power aimed at bolstering training and apprenticeship opportunities for youth, women, Aboriginals, and returning veterans and reservists.

"Ontario's Building and Construction Trades have a very strong relationship with Bruce Power; something that is in large measure due to the work and progressive legacy of Duncan Hawthorne," said Dillon, adding that "we will work hard to ensure that upcoming refurbishments at the Bruce site will help secure reliable, clean, and affordable electricity for decades to come."

"I sincerely enjoyed working with Duncan Hawthorne and on behalf of all construction trades, I congratulate him on his well-deserved retirement," said Dillon. "We look forward to working with the next President and CEO, as well as with the Bruce Power team as we meet new opportunities in the power sector," concluded Dillon.

The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario represents 150,000 trades workers throughout the province.
