KONE wins order to supply elevators and escalators for Norwegian Cruise Line's latest ship
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
KONE Corporation, press release, February 16, 2016
KONE Corporation, one of the global leaders in the elevator and escalator
industry, has signed a contract for the supply of elevators and escalators with
the German shipyard Meyer Werft. The contract concerns the supply of vertical
transportation solutions for a luxury cruise ship to be built for Norwegian
Cruise Line. The yet unnamed Breakaway Plus-class cruise ship, which will carry
over 4,000 passengers upon its delivery in 2018, will be built at Meyer Werft's
shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.
KONE will design, supply and install altogether 32 elevators and two escalators
tailored for passenger and service use. The elevator technology will be based on
the energy-efficient KONE MonoSpace® and KONE MiniSpace(TM) solutions.
"We are happy to work once again in partnership with the Meyer Werft group and
Norwegian Cruise Line on this new and exciting project," says Ari Winter, Head
of Marine Business at KONE. "The importance of moving people efficiently on a
cruise ship cannot be overstated and we are looking forward to providing our
people flow expertise and solutions for another great marine project."
Norwegian Cruise Line, based in Miami, is one of three major global cruise
vacation companies and has a 48-year history of breaking the boundaries of
traditional cruising. The Papenburg-based Meyer Werft, founded in 1795, has been
owned by seven generations of the Meyer family. Today, Meyer Werft is one of the
leading shipyards in the cruise ship building segment and has developed one of
the most modern production premises in the shipbuilding industry.
The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2015.
