This year, stakeholder organizations such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are connected through a networked system to illustrate how a prostate cancer patient might easily receive a better continuum of care. Without additional work on the patient's part, his information will move from a private physician's office where his initial diagnosis took place to an oncology specialist; from there, he is given details on an appropriate clinical trial, asked if he would like to participate, is enrolled in the trial and receives follow-up contact by his initial medical team, all using the same data.

According to a referenced by the National Cancer Institute, less than three percent of cancer patients choose to participate in clinical trials, primarily due to lack of information. Both of these problems could be alleviated if more physicians and private clinics established patient registries containing patient characteristics, patterns of care and outcomes -- information already being collected by electronic health records.
