(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Corporate news announcement processed and transmitted by Hugin AS.The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (Wettenberg, August 12, 2009) - PVA TePla AG, Wettenberg, producer ofspecial systems for manufacturing high-tech materials, developed andbuilt a high-temperature vacuum furnace in which segment parts forthe Herschel telescope were sintered.After several years of development and planning, the European spacetelescope was launched by rocket on May 14, 2009. Just a few weekslater, scientists were fascinated by the first pictures, which showobjects far away from the Earth in unprecedented detail.The centerpiece of the satellite is the biggest mirror ever built forspace applications. With a diameter of 3.5 meters, it is approx. 1.5times bigger than that of the famous Hubble telescope.Due to the extreme requirements in terms of weight, mechanicalstability and resistance to the temperature fluctuations that occurin space, silicon carbide (SiC) was chosen for the mirror material.SiC is a ceramic material that is produced at high temperatures in avacuum.PVA TePla has been specializing in these extreme productionconditions for high-tech materials for many years. Ultimately, thecompany was commissioned by a French customer to build a largehigh-temperature vacuum system. Segments of the space mirror shapedlike slices of cake were sintered in this system in a vacuum at2000°C, giving them their hugely robust structure.The Herschel telescope is now "parked" at the Lagrange point L2approx. 1.5 million km from the Earth, from where it relays imagesfrom the depths of the universe with its two infrared cameras and aspectrometer.In the next three years or so, scientists expect to receive newfindings on the formation and development of galaxies, thecomposition of comets and surfaces and atmospheres of planets in oursolar system.Photos are attached to this press release in the PDF document below.For further information, please contact:Dr. Thomas MetzgerPhone: +49(0)641/68690-143thomas.metzger(at)pvatepla.comDr. Gert FisahnPhone: +49(0)641/68690-400gert.fisahn(at)pvatepla.comwww.pvatepla.comImages: ESAFurther information from ESA (English): http://sci.esa.int/herschelhttp://hugin.info/130372/R/1334056/316506.pdf --- End of Message ---PVA TePla AGIm Westpark 10 - 12 Wettenberg GermanyWKN: 746100; ISIN: DE0007461006; Index: CDAX, GEX, Prime All Share;Listed: Prime Standard in Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse, Freiverkehr in Börse Stuttgart, Freiverkehr in Niedersächsische Börse zu Hannover, Freiverkehr in Börse Berlin, Freiverkehr in Hanseatische Wertpapierbörse zu Hamburg, Freiverkehr in Börse Düsseldorf, Regulierter Markt in Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse;
