USC Educator and Addiction Medicine Pioneer Dr. Akikur Mohammad Speaks Out Against Improperly Trained Physicians and 'Pill Mills'

(firmenpresse) - MALIBU, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/15/11 -- Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of , one of the in the country and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the (USC.edu), has vowed to do his part to eliminate the unnecessary deaths directly associated with careless prescription practices. With 30,000 Americans dying from overdose last year and roughly half from prescription drugs; Dr. Mohammad is launching a personal and professional campaign to educate the public about the dangers of visiting the wrong physician.
Dr. Mohammad said, "Simply because a physician has a prescription pad does not mean they are qualified to write responsible prescriptions, in fact, many times it is just the opposite." Mohammad added, "A staggering number of physicians are untrained in the field of addiction, which means that their prescription pad is more like a weapon than a solution when dealing with drug-seeking addicts. With the primary cause of accidental death in 20 out of 50 states coming at the hand of prescription medication, I'd say it's time to take action and I will no longer remain silent as innocent people die. It is the physician's responsibility to identify addictive behavior and respond accordingly; however, there is no mandatory training in place to make sure all physicians are armed with the education they need to responsibly work with addicts. The system is seriously flawed!"
Dr. Mohammad and his team will be using their forthcoming series of 'town hall' meetings as one platform to inspire change and awareness regarding the need for better-informed physicians through mandatory government programs. Mohammad added, "Many states in our country have prescription monitoring programs available that simply aren't being used by practicing physicians for various reasons; this is unacceptable and indicative of the need for our government to step in and enforce such programs. As oath-taking physicians, we have an obligation to our patients and the betterment of humanity through responsible medicine; it's about time irresponsible physicians are held accountable for their actions and my team and I won't rest until there is a better system in place."
