Astronomical Accolades approx. In March of this year the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) officially designated Jasper National Park as a . At 11,228km(2), Jasper is the largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world, and the only preserve in Canada with a town wholly within the preserve. This is one of the only areas in southwestern Canada with exceptional darkness, which provides outstanding opportunities for visitor experiences like daytime Sidewalk Astronomy Roves scheduled throughout the summer, and fall interpretive highlights including Mysteries of the Night - Out Beyond the Street, Our Solar System, and Galaxies and Nebula programming out at Whistlers Campground.

Parks Canada and Tourism Jasper will roll out the red carpet this October with the Dark Skies Star Festival, a sky-high celebration of Jasper National Park's recent designation. Saddle up to Jasper approx. Dust off your cowboy boots and dig out that 10 gallon hat - it's time! This annual event (Aug 17-20) is the only professional rodeo hosted in a national park, and it attracts top cowboys, cowgirls, and stock from around the world. Events like bull riding, bareback, saddle bronc and barrel races are complemented by a rodeo barn dance, pancake breakfast, great entertainment, and much more. For details visit .
Pelts and Paddles Rendezvous approx. Parks Canada and the invite everyone to step back in time for a fun-filled historic picnic to celebrate legendary explorer David Thompson. Rendezvous with your gang at the airfield (Aug 18, 11:00am-6:00pm) and ride a hay wagon, pack a horse, learn traditional Aboriginal skills, and experience "then and now" from trappers, interpreters, voyageurs and cowboys. Stage performances will take place throughout the day featuring Jasper's Fiddle River Band, French Canadian sensation Les Bucherons and live theatre from British Columbia, performing Koo Koo Sint (star gazer). During the mid-afternoon, look over the river bank and watch the skills of the Voyageur paddlers, with a traditional arrival ceremony taking place at 3:00pm.
Rise early the next day for the Athabasca Voyageur Brigade Launch (Aug 19, 8:00am Jasper airfield) where crews in traditional 25 foot Voyageur canoes depart on a three-day, 130 km historic paddle east bound on the Athabasca River. Viewing will be available along Highway 16.
Ice is Nice approx. The world's most scenic drive, the (Highway 93), is a 230 km stretch of road that begins in Jasper and winds through spectacular Canadian Rockies landscape to Lake Louise, and continues 2,345 km on to Wickenburg, AZ. Earlier this year, Jasper's Mayor officially designated a touchstone Jonas Slide rock cairn on Connaught Drive as Mile Zero of Highway 93, marking the initial spot with a railroad spike, in keeping with Jasper's strong railway history. A boulder, which played a significant role in the town's history, has been relocated to the official Mile Zero site - and by end of summer 2011 it will become the signature photographic opportunity for people starting their Icefields Parkway journey.
