General contractor for design, construction and commissioning of a 240-megawatt
gas and steam power plant
Stuttgart (Germany), 18 November 2010
The global engineering and construction company M+W Group (until 2009: M+W
Zander), is to set up a 240-megawatt gas and steam power plant over the next 5
years in the city of Kazan (capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan in the
Russian Federation). A letter of intent has been signed between M+W Group as the
general contractor and P&B Investment LLC, Kazan as the project company. M+W
Group will undertake the complete engineering, construction and commissioning of
the plant of which the first heat supplies are expected to commence towards the
end of 2012 with the project finally completed in 2013. The order volume amounts
to some 280 million euro. A binding contract for the initial planning phase has
been signed in Kazan after a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of
Tatarstan on 11 November 2010.
The driver for the constructing of the power station is the growing demand for
thermal and electrical energy in Kazan and the Republic of Tatarstan.
Additionally, Kazan is the venue for the 27th Universiade (www.kazan2013.com) in
2013, which will lead to a further surge in demand for electricity and district
heating. At present, the growing demand for energy is met by means of electrical
energy from neighbouring energy networks. Kazan, with over a million
inhabitants, is located on the Volga river 750 kilometers east of Moscow.
After completion, there will be several gas and steam turbines and heat recovery
boilers available. The gas turbines convert primary energy from the natural gas
into electrical energy, while the heat recovery boilers convert the remaining
thermal energy from the combustion gases into steam. The downstream steam
turbine then converts the steam into electrical energy. The process heat to
supply district heating is provided via heat exchangers. By combining power and
heat production, the new power station will achieve overall efficiency of some
75 per cent (about (50 per cent electrical energy).
