ST-Ericsson Meets Rising Demand for Rich Dual-SIM Phones
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Samsung's Dual-SIM Dual-Standby handsets based on ST-Ericsson's high-value
entry, multimedia platforms
Geneva, Switzerland, December 09, 2010 - ST-Ericsson announced that Samsung, a
global leader in mobile technology, has chosen two ST-Ericsson platforms to
underpin its Dual-SIM Dual-Standby handsets, the E2152 and the Ch(at)t 322. As well
as supporting an array of multimedia features, ST-Ericsson's low-cost and power-
efficient G4852 and G4906 GSM/GPRS platforms allow two SIM cards to be used in
one handset simultaneously, enabling consumers to easily make or receive calls
over two different networks or via two different subscriptions. All of ST-
Ericsson's single chip 2G/EDGE platforms support Dual-SIM Dual-Standby.
The Samsung E2152, which went on sale in Europe and Asia in September, weighs
just over 80 grams, yet offers talk-time of up 11 hours and standby time of up
to 660 hours. The Samsung Ch(at)t 322 was launched in Russia in November and will
then be progressively rolled out to the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS), Southeast Asia, India, China, Middle East, and Africa. It offers talk-
time of up to 11 hours and stand-by time of up to 500 hours. These compact
handsets can be used to browse the web and social networks, capture still
photographs and videos, listen to and record FM radio, download and play MP3
files, while also supporting file transfer via Bluetooth. The Ch(at)t 322 has also
a QWERTY keyboard, which makes it particular appealing to business travellers
and social network enthusiasts.
"Many people are looking to buy highly-capable Dual-SIM Dual-Standby handsets
that make it easy for them to use two different networks or two different
numbers," said Hyungmoon Noh, Vice President of R&D Planning Team at Samsung
Electronics. "ST-Ericsson's robust and cost-effective platforms are enabling us
to respond quickly to this fast rising demand with compelling feature-rich
handsets that everyone can afford."
Strategy Analytics forecasts that 206 million Dual-SIM Dual-Standby handsets
will be sold worldwide in 2014, compared with 41 million in 2010.
"Samsung's selection of two ST-Ericsson platforms for its Dual-SIM Dual-Standby
handsets highlights both the strength of our high-value entry portfolio and our
ability to help customers respond to emerging market consumer needs in a timely
and cost-effective way," said Pascal Langlois, Senior Vice President, Chief
Sales and Marketing Officer of ST-Ericsson. "Underpinned by our single-chip
platforms, Samsung's E2152 and Ch(at)t 322 will enable millions more people to
purchase highly-convenient and highly-capable Dual-SIM handsets."
Notes to Editors
A Dual-SIM Dual-Standby handset can be idle on two different operators' networks
or on two different subscriptions on the same operator's network (one for
personal use, one for business use). When one SIM, or subscription, is on a call
or data session, the other SIM is not reachable.
The G4852 and the G4906 Dual-SIM Dual-Standby platforms are designed to allow
either SIM card to be used for voice calls, emails, messages, web browsing,
social networking and instant messaging.
