SECOND FISHING SEASON SUSPENDED IN DECEMBER
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
On 19 December, PRODUCE, the Peruvian Ministry of Production's Fishing Vice
Ministry, the entity that executes and directs the sector's policies to
guarantee the rational management of fishing resources and preservation of the
environment, issued resolution 337 suspending the second fishing season for the
center - north area of Peru (North of 16(th) parallel) for twenty one days from
Monday December 20(th) at 0:00 thru Sunday January 9(th) at 24:00.
Normal fishing activities will resume on Monday January 10(th) at 0:00.
Prior to this resolution, on 2 December, PRODUCE issued resolution 319
suspending the second fishing season for the center - north area of Peru (North
of 16(th) parallel) for seven days from Monday December 6(th) at 0:00 thru
Sunday December 12(th) at 24:00 and on 11 December, PRODUCE issued resolution
327 suspending the second fishing season for the center-north area of Peru
(North of 16(th) parallel) for seven days from Monday December 13(th) at 0:00
thru Sunday December 19(th) at 24:00.
"We believe the measure taken by PRODUCE is adequate as it ensures the
sustainability of the biomass by avoiding juvenile fishing and bycatch. As the
week goes by, sea temperatures are expected to increase and the biomass should
naturally separate juveniles from adults. It is noteworthy that this will have
an effect on the expected production and shipments expected during December. In
the fourth quarter as a whole we will only ship around 13,000MT compared to
32,900 MT during the same period last year. The differential will be delayed
until Q1 2011, and some of the shipments expected during Q1 2011 could be
postponed to Q2 2011," says Samuel Dyer Coriat, CEO of Copeinca ASA.
The maximum allowable catch limit of anchovy for indirect human consumption for
the second fishing season is 2,070,000 MT and so far Copeinca has caught around
15% of its quota.
