Statkraft and Elkem to cooperate on energy recovery
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - (Oslo, 25 August 2009) Statkraft and Elkem have entered into anagreement to build an energy recovery facility at the Elkem Thamsavnplant at Orkanger in Sør-Trøndelag county.The facility will recover heat from the plant's processing steam andproduce a total of 180 GWh of electricity annually. The cost of thefacility is estimated to exceed NOK 500 million."The energy recovery facility will make Elkem Thamshavn one of themost energy-efficient silicon plants in the world, with a recoveryrate of 25 per cent," says plant manager Alf Tore Haug at ElkemThamshavn."It is important for Statkraft to contribute to realising goodindustrial energy efficiency projects. In addition to increasing theenergy efficiency at Elkem Thamshavn, the facility will contribute tonew energy production and an improved energy balance in centralNorway," Sverre Gotaas, head of Innovation and Growth at Statkraftstresses.The parties will carry out a main study this autumn and are aimingfor an investment decision in order to have a completed facility bythe autumn of 2011.On Friday, the Enova board decided to support the project with NOK 90million.Statkraft is Europe's largest renewable energy company.
