Greenhouse Delight Foods Highlights Study Showing Cost Benefits of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Abbotsford, British Columbia, March 25, 2011 - Greenhouse Delight Foods presents
numbers that refute the perception that fresh produce is more expensive than
other options such as processed food.
Health experts agree that fresh produce is essential for a well balanced diet.
Eating the recommended amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables is essential for
calorie reduction and to ensure consumers get many of the required vitamins and
minerals they need on a daily basis.
Unfortunately many people don't know how inexpensive getting the proper daily
requirement can be.
Determining the cost per serving of fresh fruits and vegetables can be a
challenge for consumers, but fortunately all that work has been done for us.
Recently, the Produce Marketing Association commissioned "The Perishables Group"
to conduct a study to determine the lowest average cost per serving for a
consumer to meet daily dietary recommendations by purchasing nine servings of
fresh fruits and vegetables. Data collected from more than 13,000 stores
included sales at both everyday retail prices and promoted price. Items
appearing in the study were limited to those that are typically eaten as a
serving. Produce items, such as hot peppers, garlic and herbs, mainly used as
ingredients, were not included.
The initial results showed that daily cost for nine servings was $2.18. But the
news gets even better. If a consumer purchases only those fruits and vegetables
which are consistently lower in price, the daily cost for nine servings dropped
to $1.49
However it doesn't end there. If that same consumer focuses on purchasing fruits
and vegetables that are on sale in weekly food page ads, flyers, etc., the
average daily cost for nine servings drops to ONLY $.88
There are several different programs to help ensure consumers get the right
amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. The study chose the most
onerous which was nine servings per day. If consumers followed a less rigorous
routine the total daily cost dropped even further.
Greenhouse Delight Foods produces bell peppers, which are an excellent source of
many of the necessary minerals and vitamins. Many people don't know that red
bell peppers contain about 2 1/2 times more vitamin C than a whole orange.
Whole Foods has developed a new index to help guide consumers in selecting those
fruits and vegetables with the highest nutrition. The index is called: Aggregate
Nutrient Density Index or ANDI for short. An ANDI score shows the nutrient
density of a food on a scale from 1 to 1000 based on nutrient content, and
places red peppers at the number three position in nutritional value for all non
green vegetables.
Greenhouse Delight Foods hopes that if consumers possess the knowledge of how
inexpensive fresh fruits and vegetables really are they will consume more of
them.
