Honor for the INTRABEAM(®) intraoperative radiotherapy system - on the road to a
new standard in the treatment of breast cancer
JENA - 28 March 2011
Medical systems supplier Carl Zeiss Meditec has been honored with the German
Innovation Award for its INTRABEAM(® )radiotherapy system. Clinical studies have
verified the potential of reducing the up-to-six-week radiotherapy of breast
cancer patients to a single, approximately 30-minute boost during the operation.
The top-notch jury was impressed by this as well as the emerging market success.
Dr. Ludwin Monz, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG: "INTRABEAM is a
prime example of how we can contribute to medical advances with innovations.
Receiving the German Innovation Award fills us with pride and further
demonstrates that we are on the right track with our strategy."
Dr. Dietrich Wolf, Director of the Radiotherapy Business Unit at Carl Zeiss
Meditec AG: "I am delighted that the many years of research and development work
we put in together with our clinical partners are paying off. The continuous
dialog with our customers played a key role. INTRABEAM enables new approaches to
the treatment of cancer and is a product with real added value for patients,
doctors and cost carriers in the healthcare system."
Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz from the University Hospital in Mannheim, one of the
pioneers in treatment with INTRABEAM: "The value of the INTRABEAM system for
clinical application is enormous. Primarily for the patients, therapy with
INTRABEAM means a gentler and shorter treatment: the one-time intraoperative
irradiation preserves the surrounding tissue during the procedure and minimizes
the dose on the skin. Furthermore, the reduction of the irradiation period from
six weeks to one day, and the corresponding elimination of long travel times
lead to financial savings for the cost carriers."
Innovation with verified effectiveness
In recent years, the intraoperative boost with the INTRABEAM system was compared
to the multi-week treatment standard during the independent, international
TARGIT-A study. More than 2000 patients took part in the study, which
demonstrated that the new treatment method with INTRABEAM is not inferior to the
multi-week external irradiation method for the selected group of patients. The
study results were published in The Lancet medical journal and since then have
received a lot of feedback in the international trade press.
The German Innovation Award

Zeiss Meditec was honored in the category "medium-sized business".
