1855 announces the acquisition of ChateauOnline
The pioneer in wine sales on the Internet
Paris, 4 April 2011 - Press release.
1855 announces today that it has acquired ChateauOnline, the pioneer in wine
sales on the Internet in France and in Europe.
The pioneer of wine sales on the Internet
Created in 1998 when the Internet had just started to develop in France,
ChateauOnline is historically the pioneer in wine sales on the Internet in
France as well as in Europe.
ChateauOnline's originality and strength have always consisted of three
elements:
* French wines offering "remarkable value for money," according to the wine
magazine La Revue du Vin de France.
* A magnificent selection of wines from around the world priced at less than
10 Euros, "a real plus", according to the magazine Cuisine Actuelle.
* A simple presentation enabling novices to be initiated into the world of
quality wines, especially thanks to its service "Advise me!"
According to the magazine Capital, "the range of wines from ChateauOnline is
quite researched, and the wine lover will make wonderful finds. ChateauOnline is
reputed for its professionalism."
Today, ChateauOnline has a database of 100,000 clients and 700,000 wine lovers.
The average price per bottle sold is ?12.00 (including tax), and the average
amount that a clients spends per year is ?300 (including tax).
A very open sales process for French and European players
1855 acquired the control of ChateauOnline from CL Financial Group, one of the
biggest private conglomerates based in Trinidad in the Caribbean.
Winchester Capital, the financial advisor chosen by CL Financial Group, carried
out the sales process. "For the sale of ChateauOnline, Winchester Capital
proceeded with a fair, complete and competitive process, involving numerous
potential buyers in Europe," says Ceasar N. Anquillare, CEO of Winchester
Capital.
Complete coverage of the market, with the three finest brands of the sector
"Why have we decided to acquire ChateauOnline? For three reasons," says Emeric
Sauty de Chalon, President of 1855.
"First of all, in terms of reputation, ChateauOnline is the leading brand of
wine sales on the Internet: after Ipsos, one third of French consumers know the
brand. ChateauOnline's powerful brand is the result of large investments in
marketing and advertising implemented during the past twelve years. We could
thus not let this opportunity pass us by."
"Then, from a financial perspective, this acquisition will generate strong
synergies. How? Thanks to the pooling together of support functions within the
group (such as finance and accounting, information technology and human
resources).
However, ChateauOnline will remain entirely autonomous concerning its operations
in marketing, product policy and client relations, since the group is organised
similar to a federation of independent, autonomous and reactive SMEs.
Finally, from a strategic perspective, the group now has a complete coverage of
the high-end wine market with this new acquisition: three bands that are clearly
positioned in their market.
* the brand 1855 focuses on the luxury market and on clients who are great
wine lovers.
* the brand Cave Privée focuses on the market of great winemakers and on
passionate clients.
* the brand ChateauOnline focuses on mid-range and local wines and on clients
who are connoisseurs or novices.
By combining this new acquisition with 1855's internal growth, we are confident
that the group will surpass Euro 20 million in sales for 2011 and once again
increase its profitability."
