Spittal Pond is prime bird-watching territory and first port of call for any budding ornithologist, with over 500 species of bird taking in its waters, such as American Redstarts, black and white warblers and Ovenbirds. However, this Nature Reserve has many other wildlife wonders hidden up its sleeve – Bermuda skinks, buckeye butterflies and humpback whales to be precise. It also marks the spot where man first made landfall on the island – look out for the letters ‘RP’ carved onto what is known as Portuguese Rock, made by shipwrecked sailors in 1543.
