Former First Lady of the United States Joins Asian University for Women Council of Patrons
The Asian University for Women Council of Patrons supports a global network of women leaders who seek to effect positive change in their home communities and the world at large
(firmenpresse) - CHITTAGONG, BANGLADESH -- (Marketwired) -- 07/20/17 -- is pleased to announce that will serve as a Patron of the University. Mrs. Bush served as First Lady from 2001 to 2009 when her husband George W. Bush was President of the United States.
The University's Council of Patrons is chaired by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and includes First Lady of Japan Akie Abe; former Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino; UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova; former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong Anson Chan; former Danish Environment Minister Lone Dybkjaer; Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg; and Her Excellency Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the first woman president of Sri Lanka. The Patrons advocate for women's education and empowerment in general and Asian University for Women in particular.
Laura Bush is a leading voice for spreading freedom and promoting human rights across the globe. For more than a decade, she has led efforts through the U.S.-Afghan Women's Council to protect the hard-earned rights of women in that country. As First Lady, she made three trips to Afghanistan and in 2001 she delivered the President's weekly radio address -- a first for a First Lady -- to direct international attention to the Taliban's oppression of women. In 2016, she wrote the introduction to the book We Are Afghan Women: Voices of Hope published by the George W. Bush Institute. She has also played an important role in the establishment of the American University of Afghanistan.
