Stonesoft participates in World IPv6 Day
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
One of the first security vendors to offer IPv6 support
Helsinki, Finland - 8 June, 2011 - Stonesoft has made its public website
www.stonesoft.com and corporate blog StoneBlog http://stoneblog.stonesoft.com
available over IPv6 to demonstrate their readiness to help their customers
migrate securely into IPv6. Both web services are IPv6 enabled and protected by
StoneGate Firewall/VPN.
The goal of the IPv6 Test Flight Day is to motivate organizations across the
industry to prepare their services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as
IPv4 addresses run out. Stonesoft is among the first security vendors to
participate in the World IPv6 Day, and whereby many participants offer their
services over IPv6 for a 24-hour "test flight", Stonesoft's corporate website
and blog will remain available over both IPv4 and IPv6 also after the test
flight.
"We at Stonesoft take great pride in making sure our customers around the world
can seamlessly migrate to IPv6. The new features offered by StoneGate 5.3 allow
our customers to enable dual stack IPv6 operations for their internal and
external networks in an easy and secure manner. For example, public servers can
be easily made IPv6 accessible by implementing dual stack IPv4/IPv6
configuration for them and protecting IPv6 access to the servers with the same
StoneGate firewalls that are used for IPv4 traffic", explains Antti Kuvaja,
Director, Product Management at Stonesoft.
"RWTH Aachen welcomes the additional IPv6 possibilities provided by the
StoneGate solution. Educational networks in Germany are making strides with IPv6
implementation, and security should not be an afterthought", said Mr. Andreas
Schreiber, Department Manager at the Center for Computing and Communication,
RWTH Aachen University, Germany.
StoneGate IPS provides stateful access control and full deep inspection
capabilities for IPv6 network traffic already, including IPv6 encapsulation, IP-
in-IP and for GRE tunneling protocols.
StoneGate Firewall/VPN 5.3 enhances IPv6 support by bringing support for active-
active load-balancing clustering also for IPv6 environments. Other IPv6
enhancements in the 5.3 version include support for site to site IPsec VPN
connections over IPv6 networks protecting IPv4 or IPv6 traffic inside the VPN.
Also IPv6 traffic can be tunneled over IPv4 networks using standard IPsec VPN in
StoneGate Firewall/VPN.

World IPv6 Day
One of the goals of World IPv6 Day is to expose potential issues under
controlled conditions and address them as soon as possible. The vast majority of
users should be able to access services as usual, but in rare cases,
misconfigured or misbehaving network equipment, particularly in home networks,
may impair access to participating websites during the trial. It has been
estimated that 0.05% of users may experience such problems, but participating
organizations will be working together with operating system manufacturers, home
router vendors and ISPs to minimize the number of users affected. Participants
will also be working together to provide tools to detect problems and offer
suggested fixes in advance of the trial. For more information about World IPv6
Day, visit http://www.worldipv6day.org.
About the need for IPv6
IPv4 has approximately four billion IP addresses (the sequence of numbers
assigned to each Internet-connected device). The explosion in the number of
people, devices and web services on the Internet means that IPv4 is running out
of space. IPv6, the next-generation Internet protocol, which provides over four
billion times more space, will connect the billions of people not connected
today and will help ensure the Internet can continue its current growth rate.
