Inauguration of Metso-funded school in Sichuan, China

(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Metso Corporation's press release on September 7, 2009 at 2:45 p.m.Metso and Red Cross of China teamed up to rebuild the Sandong highschool in Jiajing, Sichuan province, after the school was badlydamaged in the 2008 earthquake. The school, with a student body ofover 300 students of 12 to 15 years old, was renamed Metso BoaiMiddle School at the inauguration last Friday.Teaching got under way at the new, four-story, reinforced concreteschool already last spring. The new school building houses ordinaryclassrooms as well as multimedia classrooms, laboratories, teachers'facilities and meeting rooms. Before the construction work of the newschool building was finished, the students studied for a year intemporary class rooms with dirt floors.The initiative for the relief project came from Metso's personnel inChina who contacted Red Cross of China. After hearing that many ofthe school buildings in the earthquake area had suffered severedamage in the catastrophe, Metso employees decided to collect fundsto rebuild a school situated in the disaster area. Red Cross of Chinarecommended as the object Sandong high school, located 124 kilometersfrom the earthquake's epicentre. "We will continue to monitor thesuccess of the school and its students in the future by staying intouch with the local government and the Red Cross," says JukkaSeppälä, Vice President, Stakeholder Relations and Trade Policy,Metso Corporation.Metso's social responsibility projects focus on support for science,environmental protection and youth activities.
