September 8,2009. To demonstrate to service providers the benefits of anext-generation access architecture based on WDM-PON (WavelengthDivision Multiplexing Passive Optical Networks) technology, ADVAOptical Networking has opened a customer solution center in itsMeiningen, Germany facility. The center is designed to reveal howbusiness, residential and wholesale access and backhaul requirementscan best be served over a single unified infrastructure that requireslittle to no active equipment between the Central Office (CO) andCustomer Premise (CP).Access networks have struggled to keep pace with the explosion inbandwidth consumption and the growing number of network types andprotocols. To complicate the service provider business model, consumers have been unwilling to pay higher prices for bandwidth. Toremain profitable, service providers now look to bring fiber closerto the end user and drive simplicity into, and costs out of, theirnetworks.ADVA Optical Networking's next-generation access solution does justthat. As an extension to its flagship ADVA FSP 3000 platform, thecompany's Flexible Remote Node (FRN) employs temperature-hardened WDMfilters. When deployed in the network, the filters create apoint-to-multi-point solution with a single feeder fiber between theCO and the service edge. Low-insertion loss allows network operatorsto deliver more bandwidth to more endpoints from fewer sites that sitfarther back in the network. Access links are fully visible and canbe provisioned remotely.Optical links to third-party devices can be monitored through ADVAOptical Networking's Optojack(TM) service demarcation technology. This creates an advantageous equation where service providers achievelower operational expenses via less energy consumption, fewer activesites, less maintenance and simpler network management."Deploying WDM in the access network creates a flat architecture thatis more efficient because it eliminates multiple layers of costlyaggregation equipment and protocol conversions," stated AndrewSchmitt, directing analyst for optical at Infonetics Research."Several carriers have embraced this approach because it supportstheir long-term strategy to eliminate active sites and consolidateCOs.""Today's access networks have reached critical mass," confirmedStephan Rettenberger, vice president of marketing at ADVA OpticalNetworking. "Sensitivity to initial capital expense is giving way tocloser examination of operating expenses and total cost of ownershipover the life of the equipment and network. Considering the effortand expense of extending the fiber plant closer to the end user, network operators need to ensure their next-generation accessinvestments last for more than a decade and can scale with futuredemands. Our solution has enormous growth potential and is extremelyenergy-efficient. It is based on standard WDM technology and Layer 2aggregation, so that carriers can add, remove and switch serviceswithout impacting existing ones and avoid redundant layers ofaggregation."In a related announcement, ADVA Optical Networking is also proud toannounce that it has successfully completed Optojack interoperabilitytests with multiple Ethernet switch and DSLAM (Digital SubscriberLine Access Multiplexer) vendors. Optojack establishes intelligentoptical demarcation points in the access network to monitor opticalsignals all the way to the service end point to provide the highestlevels of service availability. # # #ABOUT ADVA OPTICAL NETWORKINGADVA Optical Networking (FSE: ADV) is a global provider oftelecommunications equipment.
