Heijmans selected for 'Utrecht CS Local Train Service' contract

's-Hertogenbosch - ProRail will award the contract for the 'expansion of
platform 1 and 2 (Local Train Service)' of Utrecht Central Station (CS) to
Heijmans. This concerns a proposed award. Work planning will start immediately
and the entire works is to be completed by the spring of 2014. The contract for
this project is valued at almost ? 18 million.
Heijmans is awarded the contract because it provided the best proposal in which
price and sustainability played a key role. The fact that Heijmans is positioned
on the fifth and highest rung of ProRail's CO2 Performance Ladder was decisive
in this respect. For Heijmans, this was not the first time that its CO2
certificate resulted in the best Economically Most Favorable Tender (EMFT)
score.
Activities
The complex civil engineering and structural work will be performed by Heijmans
Civil. The work fits into Heijmans' strategy of realizing high-quality,
sustainable, integral projects in which results take priority over revenues.
Activities involve the relocation and widening of platforms 1 and 2, and the
relocation of tracks 1, 2 and 3, including the adjustment of the overhead line.
Various sub-activities are required to achieve this: The adjustment and
construction of the platforms' retaining walls, the replacement of the existing
train sheds (including new foundations), the construction of a concrete floor
(2,200 m2) above tracks 1, 2 and 3, the construction of settlement-free plates
for three tracks over the existing bicycle parking facility, the construction of
3 track beds across the existing Sijpesteijn tunnel, the building and
maintenance of travelers' facilities and the adaptation of the platform and
travelers' information systems. The work is expected to take 3 years with a May
2014 target completion date.
