TAG Oil is a Canadian-based oil & gas production and exploration company with
operations focused exclusively in New Zealand. TAG controls 100% of a stable and
modern oil and gas production facility, and is also actively drilling high-
impact exploration prospects identified across 2,712 sections of land in New
Zealand's North Island.
The company controls an extensive portfolio of 3-D defined, high-impact Taranaki
Basin prospects located in the heart of a proven prolific discovery fairway.
This provides lower risk but high-impact drilling and near-term reserve and
production growth opportunities.
In the East Coast Basin, TAG is pursuing the significant unconventional resource
potential estimated in the fractured shale source rock formations that has been
demonstrated in the Waipawa Black Shale and Wgangai Shale source-rock
formations. These oil-rich and naturally fractured formations that are
widespread across the East Coast Basin compare favourably to fractured shale
formations such as the Bakken Shale in the Williston Basin. TAG is also drilling
numerous conventional Miocene prospects at depths between 250 metres and 2,000
metres with a mid range resource potential 1.7 billion barrels.
Independent evaluations identify from 14 billion barrels of undiscovered
resource potential in a mid-case scenario to 39.8 billion barrels in a high case
scenario.
Exploration and recovery technology is unlocking major unconventional reserves
globally, from tight formations including fractured shale source rock
formations. As a first mover into New Zealand, TAG has introduced these advanced
technologies to its projects, resulting in excellent success and paving the way
for greater resource recovery.
Wellington West analyst Kevin Shaw stated, "TAG already has executed the first
horizontal multistage frac in New Zealand in a conventional oil reservoir to
ramp some production and test technology. Then they're going to apply it to the
shale oil in the next 12 to 15 months. This again is an example of North
American-based technology - proved in the Bakkens and Cardiums, etc. finding its
way around the world. Frankly, some of the international sites have more
potential in unconventional plays than does Canada because they have been less
depleted".
