The region of Puglia in Italy has a lot to offer visitors. With a rich history and culture, these towns cannot be missed on your next Italian holiday.

(firmenpresse) - Italy is a country full of history, culture and good food. For those looking for an authentic holiday in Italy, the hilltop towns of Puglia are an ideal destination. Situated right in the heel of the Italian boot, this area is filled with romantic and rustic spots. These are some of the towns you have to visit whilst in the area, along with some tips on what to do and where to stay.

Lecce

Perhaps one of the more well-known cities in Puglia, this enchanting spot is known for its Baroque beauty. The city is also known as the “Florence of the South” due to the rich Baroque architecture, central amphitheatre and ancient Roman ruins. You will find yourself spending most of your time outside, as the warm weather in Lecce invites an al fresco lifestyle – make sure you try the region’s simple but delicious Italian cuisine. Overall, this city is ideal for some laidback exploring.

If you are planning to spend a few days in Lecce, Patria Palace is a great accommodation option. You can find it right opposite the Basilica and from the rooftop terrace you can enjoy amazing views of the city. Situated in an eighteenth-century palazzo, the rooms here are comfortable and quaint.

Matera

The city of Matera is a UNESCO-listed destination, and for obvious reasons. Known best for its ancient cave dwellings, called sassi in Italian, Matera is rich in history and perfect for those wanting to explore aspects of ancient Italy. For the ultimate Matera experience, stay a night at the Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita, where you can sleep in one of the caves. There is no experience more authentic to the city and you’ll find yourself taken back in time a little by staying in this unique boutique hotel.

Besides the sassi, Matera has a lot of other things to offer. Explore the many historical crypts and churches and enjoy the local cuisine of the region. The city is also a great base for exploring the area a little more. Some of the sights on Matera’s doorstep include the impressive cliffs and caves of Polignano, the thirteenth-century Castel del Monte, the beautiful seaside town of Monopoli and the well known conical-roofed trulli located in Alberobello. There are plenty of adventures to be had here on your holiday in Italy.

Trani

The city of Trani is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture, which can be found all around the city. The best way to explore Trani is therefore by foot, as you will get a true feel of the immense history present here. Be sure to venture to the bustling harbour with great views of the Adriatic Sea and enjoy its pretty limestone streets. If you want to stay in the historic centre, your best option is Hotel Regia, which not only offers a great location but also authenticity and ambience. Like the other cities in Puglia, Trani is a great spot to settle for a few days and make your base for day trips to other interesting locations.

For anyone looking into holidays in Italy, the area of Puglia cannot be missed. You will find a little bit of everything here, from a rich culture and history to some amazing food, and you’ll quickly find yourself short of time to explore everything.
