The Lake Resort
A new property in the centre of Vilamoura, the Lake Resort is entirely dedicated to its themes of hospitality, wellbeing and oneness with nature. It is, of course, a 5-star hotel, with – deep breath – 192 rooms, 95 luxury apartments, 3 restaurants, 3 bars, extensive gardens, a spa and fitness centre, 3 outdoor pools, a beauty centre and much more. With all this on offer, you could be forgiven for forgetting about the main reason for choosing one of their top golf breaks: Algarve’s premier courses! These are located nearby, though, and the Lake Resort provides a free shuttle to all of Vilamoura’s courses, as well as privileged access to others nearby.
Golf Courses
While there’s no shortage of choice in the area, four courses deserve special attention: the Dom Pedro Laguna, the Dom Pedro Pinhal, the Dom Pedro Old Course and Villa Sol.
Dom Pedro Laguna
Dom Pedro Laguna is 6,694 yards long, with 18 holes. It’s a par-72 – ideal for those looking for more challenging golf breaks. Algarve golfing prowess could stand on this course’s reputation alone.
Dom Pedro Pinhal
At 6,948 yards, Dom Pedro Pinhal is one of the longest courses in the region. It’s another 18-hole par-72, and dates back to 1976. A 1985 renovation kept 11 holes of the original course and added an interesting mix of US and UK-style design.
Dom Pedro Old Golf Course
Inaugurated in 1969, this was Frank Pennink’s first Portuguese project. He’s subsequently been invited to design many more, and you can see why. At par-73, it’s a little more difficult than the other courses on this list, and it’s well worth the challenge – even if just for the scenic 4th hole, which loops around a lake.
Villa Sol Golf Course
6,991 yards long, Villa Sol is another par-72, though this time with 27 holes. It’s known for its difficult beginning and its abundance of long, challenging holes. Perhaps one for those who seek to be stretched by these golf breaks. Algarve isn’t known for its difficulty, but courses like this can stretch your skills.
Living, Relaxing and Dining
Living
As mentioned above, the Lake Resort is an extraordinarily well-equipped luxury hotel. Every room has a balcony with one of two spectacular views – the gardens and pools on the one side, or a private lake and the sea. There are also 9 suites available, for those who want to take their holiday to the next level.
Relaxing
The resort’s Blue & Green Spa promises to ‘awake your senses’, and it doesn’t disappoint. Inspired by the five continents and five senses, the complex includes hydrotherapy in the Blue Spa and more hands-on treatments in the Green, including exotic Eastern therapies. There’s also a relaxation area with a truly ludicrous range of options, including a sensation shower, a treatment pool, a warm and salty ‘dead sea’ area and Turkish and Roman baths.
Dining
Finally, something that should never be overlooked when you are looking for truly luxury golf breaks: Algarve’s dining experience is superb. The whole region is fast gaining a reputation for fine dining, and the Lake Resort is no exception. Its range of restaurants includes the floating Marenostrum, the contemporary Fusion and Gustatio’s unique, delicious breakfasts.
