Katie Coates, consultant and author of a new book for real estate developers, Yes Vote: The Public Hearing Plan for Developers, answers the question many project managers ask: How does a real esate developer overcome project opposition? She has worked with developers for more than 20 years and has helped clients get approval at dozens of public hearings at the city coucil and planning commission levels as well as at regional and state agencies
In working with clients to get a Yes Vote at their public hearings, Ive heard it all, Katie says, Project opponents say the project will cause brain cancer to the entire quadrant of the city its planned for, destroy the historic area, or clog streets with so much traffic the city will be unlivable.
She also says that the opponents will make slurs against the developers themselves. They say the developer is a carpetbagger who is just in it for the money and they dont care about the community, the outcome, or the consequences.
