LINX enhances its network with Transmode WDM installation
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - STOCKHOLM, Sweden - 15th September, 2009 - The London InternetExchange (LINX), one of the world's largest Internet Exchanges, hasimproved its interconnectivity with the installation of systems fromTransmode, a leading provider of optical networking solutions.Transmode TM-3000 units have been installed at four of LINX's Londonexchange sites to enable new high-speed WDM services that will helpreduce the traffic pressure on LINX's network. The Transmodeinterfaces are flexible and can easily be adapted to accommodate newmember nodes as the Internet exchange business inevitably increases.LINX is a mutual, not-for-profit organisation whose 330 membersinclude almost all UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and networkoperators plus many others from around the world. It was formed in1994 when five ISPs recognised that there were considerableoperational benefits to exchanging traffic between their networks atthe same tele-hotel where they all had facilities. LINX has a networkof ten sites around London, seven in London's Docklands, plus one inthe City, and two in West London, where it hosts a number of largeEthernet switches. When Transmode started discussions with LINX, the organisation wasconsidering the installation of a WDM solution in the London networkto enable it to cope with the demand for increased capacity. Thedecision was made to install an initial four Transmode TM-3000 unitsto support its highest traffic members that needed to pass throughthe exchange at rates up to and beyond 10Gbit/s. The Transmodeequipment installation was completed and then activated by early June2009 using highly cost-efficient 10 Gbit/s WDM technology.Mark Burton, Transmode Sales Director UK, commented, "Prior to theinstallation, Transmode provided a demonstrator at three key sitesoffering both 10G and Gigabit Ethernet services. Over the trialperiod, LINX performed comprehensive testing to observe howTransmode's systems functioned. LINX is very much focused on Ethernetover dark fibre so transport was a familiar domain to them."Mike Hughes, LINX's CTO added, "We needed a way to handle theincreasingly large traffic flows members pass between LINX sites. With some of these requiring multiple 10Gbit/s links it was clearthat offering an alternative to our Ethernet platform would benefitthe exchange and our members."Following the installation of the Transmode equipment, LINX will beable to offer an extended range of services. The WDM approach willmeet our members' requirement for increased capacity andflexibility."About LINXLINX (www.linx.net) is a mutual, not-for-profit organisation whose330-plus members include 58 of the top 100 global network operators*,almost all UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and content providersplus many from the Americas, mainland Europe, the Far East andAfrica.* Total Telecom Global 100, 2008.The connection of networks at an Internet exchange point such as LINXis known as 'peering'. Network operators use public peering acrossthe dual LINX Ethernet networks to exchange traffic with any othermember by mutual agreement. LINX also offers a managed privatenetwork interconnect facility which is used for large traffic flowsbetween two members.LINX has a presence at ten London sites connected by secure fibre andDWDM links. The core of the network currently operates across a12x10G Ethernet link. The extent and geographic resilience of thenetwork was enhanced in 2008 with the addition of three new points ofpresence, each outside the main Docklands data centre area in eastLondon. The Internet traffic at LINX consists of a wide variety of dataincluding streaming media, website downloads, business informationand emails. Peak LINX traffic is the equivalent of 1,300,000simultaneous Internet video streams.Contact: Jeremy OrbellLINX Marketing & CommunicationsTelephone: +44 (0)20 7645 3505More information at www.linx.netAbout TransmodeTransmode is a leading provider of optical networking solutions fortransport of data, voice and video traffic, based on CWDM and DWDMtechnology (Coarse/Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing).Transmode's unique Intelligent WDM (iWDM(TM)) approach has lead towidespread deployment of over 10000 systems in a customer baseconsisting of more than 250 fixed and mobile network operators, service providers, large enterprises and public institutions acrossEurope, the Americas and Asia.Transmode's comprehensive product portfolio and strong globalorganization enable our customers to grow the capacity and to improveservice level of their regional, metro and metro access networks, ona cost-efficient basis without compromising on functionality. For additional information about Transmode, please visitwww.transmode.comFor more information please contact:Ola ElmelandVice President Marketing & CommunicationsTransmode Systems ABTelephone: +46 8 506 882 71Email: ola.elmeland(at)transmode.comThis announcement was originally distributed by Hugin.
