Gran Canaria is more than it seems. There is a wealth of culture, nature and unending activities that will enrich your Gran Canaria holiday.

(firmenpresse) - Due to Gran Canaria’s tropical weather, beautiful beaches and sparkling oceans, the island can often be seen as a do-nothing-but-relax holiday destination. However, there is so much to explore, with fun and adventure that is sure to make your Gran Canaria holiday a memorable experience for all your travelling companions.

Roque Nublo

Just a short way from Tejeda’s city centre, this 80-metre-tall volcanic rock is a brilliant hiking destination that offers expansive views of the whole island from its summit. The rock was formed from a volcanic eruption approximately 4.5 million years ago and can be easily reached by a private or shared shuttle.

Jardin Botanico Viera y Clavijo

Named after its founder José de Viera y Clavijo, this famous botanic garden holds over 500 different species of plants that are indigenous to the Canary Islands and nearby Macaronesian islands, as well as a host of imported flora.

Vegueta

Vegueta is one of Gran Canaria’s best known towns. Founded in the fifteenth century by the Spanish, it is made up of historic architecture from a range of time periods, making it a wonderful composition of style and art. The highlight of this historic city is the Cathedral of Santa Ana, which was built throughout the 1500s and is one of the most important of all Canarian religious monuments. Other activities in Vegueta include visiting the Museum of Sacred Art and a host of brilliant art galleries and eating at the local restaurants.

Water Sports

For something with a little more excitement, there are a whole range of water sports available to try on your Gran Canaria holiday. With its beautiful ocean and warm sea breeze, the island boasts the perfect conditions. Why not try the following?
•Scuba diving
•Water skiing
•Sailing
•Windsurfing

Casa de Colon

It has been reported that Christopher Columbus stopped off in the Canary Islands in 1492 on his way to discovering the New World. He reportedly stayed in the Casa de Colon, a hotel which now features a range of Columbus-related cultural and historical artefacts (which will be of interest to any history buffs). Highlights include models of Columbus’ three famous ships: The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.

How to Get There

The best way to travel to the island is to fly directly into the airport located on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria. Transfers are available all over the island, but make sure to book in advance to get your Gran Canaria holiday adventure started as soon as you get off the plane.
The Canarian paradise is more than just its beautiful beaches and vast seafronts – it also has a rich and fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. With such a wide range of cultural and outdoor activities available, it’s more than likely that a Gran Canaria holiday will be satisfying for everyone involved.
