The educational program saw participation from 181 students from grades 1 through 5 learning about the construction of a sewer line in their community. The idea for the outreach stemmed from the children's natural curiosity about a sewer line project located a short distance from their school.
Conducted on the Friday before Thanksgiving break, the educational community outreach involved damage prevention education and underground infrastructure protection organization Colorado 811. Children were invited to the sewer line construction site to learn about site safety, watch an age-appropriate damage prevention video, participate in a mock Job Safety Analysis briefing, and perform crew warm-up calisthenics.
Prior to the visit, the crew from Milestone Companies secured and cordoned off the job site, set up flagger signs at traffic intersections, and escorted the students and teachers to the project location. At the site, the children were given safety hardhats and the opportunity to get an up-close look at heavy equipment, view a line location demonstration, and the excavation of a sewer line. Participants received color-coded 811 underground utility line cards and stickers, information about the project and the company, as well as some fun items and their hardhats.
According to a spokesperson for the Keenesburg, CO sewer line repair company, "We were delighted to have more than 180 elementary school students participate in our community outreach and learn more about the work being performed near their school. The outreach represents an opportunity to contribute to broadening the children's learning experience."
