Explore the Real Menorca on a Beautiful Coastal Beach Walk

Keen hikers will find a network of trails across the island to satisfy them. But while a variety of hikes of different lengths and difficulty may appeal to some, if you just want to combine a gentle walk with stopping off at two of the island’s most picturesque beaches, the coastal trail between Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta is for you.
Cala Macarella
For those renting a beachside Menorca villa in nearby Cala Galdana, Cala Macarella is a short car journey away and a great place to start your coastal walk. The beach has its own car park so you can park up and explore by foot.
Cala Macarella is one of the most photographed coves on the island of Menorca, and for good reason. Its beautiful sandy beach is sheltered by rocky cliffs and the water is a shimmering clear aquamarine.
There are no water sports on the beach to disturb its tranquil beauty so it’s a great place to come and relax. The beach does get busy, especially in peak season, so early mornings are particularly recommended. And don’t worry if you forgot to pack a lunch, as there is a restaurant and bar as well as toilets and rubbish facilities.
Take the Coastal Trail
After lying on the soft sand of Cala Macarella and soaking up some sublime Menorcan sunshine it’s worth heading to the west end of the beach where you’ll find the beginning of the coastal trail clearly marked.
The trail rises gently from the beach, past natural caves in the rock face and up to the top of the cliffs where railings protect walkers from getting too close to the edge. Take a minute to drink in the stunning panoramic view of the two pretty coves and the sea beyond before starting the gentle descent down to Cala Macarelleta.
The trail is around a quarter of a mile long and makes for an easy stroll for most people. It’s worth wearing trainers or other comfortable shoes for the walk because of the rough terrain and slight gradient.
Cala Macarelleta
The smaller of the two coves, Cala Macarelleta is less crowded as it is only accessible via the coastal trail or by boat. Another beautiful beach lapped by crystal-clear turquoise water, Macarelleta makes a great second half to your beach excursion day.
Whether you choose to take the coastal trail from Cala Macarella to Cala Macarelleta, or to discover another beautiful walking trail close to your rented Menorca villa, taking time to explore this beautiful Balearic island will be a richly rewarding experience you will never forget.
