Ninu's Cave
This underground cave in Xaghra was discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa in a private site. It is characterised by its abundant stalactite and stalagmite formations, making it a surreal experience for visitors. You’ll definitely want to take your camera along if you’re visiting this unusual spot.
Blue Grotto
A gem along Malta's southern coast, this grotto faces the little deserted islet of Filfla and attracts over a hundred thousand tourists every year. Many will recognise Blue Grotto as being the setting for the Hollywood movie Troy (2004), featuring Brad Pitt.
This area is also a popular diving site, and can be conveniently reached by boat from Wied iz-Zurrieq, from where you can also enjoy superb views of Filfla and the surrounding areas.
Xerri's Grotto
Yet another underground site in Xaghra, this cave was first discovered under a house in 1923 while its owners were digging a well. It is especially popular for its unique alabaster stalactites and stalagmites. You can spot some extremely interesting formations here – in fact, some speleothems have been said to resemble a tortoise, a vulture, a giraffe and even a pair of elephant’s ears.
How to Get There
The best way get from from the UK into Malta is to select one of the several direct flights that serve this route.
