A Stroll Along Menorca’s Historic Camí de Cavalls

A Stroll Along Menorca’s Historic Camí de Cavalls

(firmenpresse) - There is no greater way to experience the natural beauty and understand the diverse environments of Menorca than by walking the historic Camí de Cavalls. This charming ancient path which encircles the entire Spanish Balearic island is one of the most popular tourist activities. Many holiday makers at our villas find it is a great way to start their Menorca holiday, as it helps them to get their bearings and see the different areas of the island.

The History of the Camí de Cavalls

The Camí de Cavalls, or “Way of Horses”, has a fascinating history which dates back to the Middle Ages. It was originally built in this period for soldiers on horseback to travel between watchtowers and defensive forts around the coastline. In addition to defence, the path was also used for communication between the towns on the island for centuries. However, more established roads were soon developed and it gradually deteriorated in condition.

This all changed in the 90s, when a group of residents campaigned to restore and protect the historic path. In 2010, work finally finished and the Camí de Cavalls was opened to the public. It is now divided into 20 different sections, allowing visitors to walk the entire 185km coastline of Menorca.

A Showcase of Menorca’s Diverse Ecosystems

Although a relatively small island, Menorca is remarkably diverse with cliff tops, coves, wetland and woodland all featured around the island. This diversity is best seen by strolling Camí de Cavalls, as each stage is noticeably different from the last. In Stage 3 at the north coast, you will find colourful farmland, olive groves and a scenic beach, whilst Stage 10 features a flat, rocky and dry landscape.

Tourists can understand the ecosystems of Menorca with helpful maps found at the start of each stage. These outline the length, altitude and different features that you can expect to find there. In addition to being educational, this also ensures that you know what to expect when you start on the path and you can pick suitable stages. Because the island is relatively small, the different sections can easily be reached from our villas and you are never too far from the path. No Menorca holiday is complete without at least a short stroll along the Camí de Cavalls.

Alternatives to Walking

Of course not everybody is keen to lace up their walking boots and spend their entire holiday trekking the coastline. There are a few alternatives to walking on offer: following the trail on horseback is a unique and fun experience. This is how the path was originally used, which will help you to envision the life of a soldier in the Middle Ages, as well as giving you the chance to ride the beautiful local Menorquin horses. You can also hire a bicycle from most beach resorts from approximately €10 a day to cycle the trail.

Strolling the historic Camí de Cavalls is a great way to start your Menorca holiday. It is the best way to see and experience the beautiful coastline, whether you are traversing as many stages as possible during your stay, or simply stopping off for a quiet picnic with stunning views around you.
