Discover Malaga’s regal heritage by visiting these majestic Moorish castles.

(firmenpresse) - Malaga may be popular for its sunshine, but it is also home of some of Europe’s intricate architectural wonders. While on holiday in this iconic destination, you shouldn’t miss visiting these magnificent historic buildings.

Alcazaba de Malaga

This Moorish Castle used to be the stronghold of the kings; it was ambitiously built in the ninth century and then rebuilt two centuries later. The empire’s Muslim rulers reigned from this citadel for many years. This strategically-built defence marvel includes a whopping 110 towers, some of which are still open for the public to view during a tour. If you’re visiting the castle, you can see the Torre de la Vela (which is a tower), the entrance (Arco de Cristo) and another tower known as Torre del Homenaje. While you’re here, you should also take the opportunity to marvel at the castle’s stunningly beautiful gardens, which are truly fit for royalty. Today, the castle houses the famous Museum of Malaga, where you can learn about the town’s impressive history.

Castillo de Gibralfaro

Gibralfaro means ‘lighthouse mountain’ and it is characterised by the regal ruins of a castle from the bygone era. The ruins are from a structure that was built in the fourteenth century and if you want to explore the mysterious building, pop in to the visitor centre on-site. Besides being connected to the fortress by several paths, it’s also a great vantage point to enjoy some stunning views of the old town and port. It’s amazing how much of the original structure and design has been retained even in this dilapidated condition. It’s truly like a gateway to the region’s magical past. You can even enjoy sunset or the breath-taking views from here.

How to Get There

The most convenient way to travel to this fun destination is by taking a flight from the UK to Malaga. There are plenty of airline companies offering several flights during the week, so there are many options from which to choose. Once you arrive at Malaga Airport, transfers are usually quick and hassle-free to your destination, provided you have pre-booked them in advance. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to stress about finding your way through the public transport… especially in a warmer climate, as it should be best enjoyed by sitting back on a deck chair by the pool instead of the wonky seats of public transport.

Bear in mind that Malaga Airport transfers can be difficult to arrange on the spot especially during the tourist season, so it’s ideal to play it safe and reserve your transit online before you set out on your trip. Also remember to stay well hydrated in the pleasantly warm climate of sunny Spain.

While this town is a favourite amongst beach lovers, it has several layers of rich heritage, history and natural beauty as well. Exploring the majestic Moorish masterpieces of the town will give you a memorable experience that you will definitely cherish for many years to come.
