Thinking about a Canadian holiday? Train journeys to Halifax offer history, natural beauty and vibrant city life – what’s not to love?

(firmenpresse) - Blissfully trundling through the breath-taking Canadian countryside by train is perhaps one of the most relaxing and unique ways to explore this wonderful country. However, no Canadian holiday train trip is complete without a stop off at the glorious Atlantic Ocean port, Halifax. Spend some time by the serene Atlantic coast and get familiar with the extensive maritime history of the port, then head in land to explore the city’s military past and peruse the magnificent display of nature.

Whichever parts of this wonderful destination excite you most, there is no question that Halifax is an essential part of any Canadian holiday. Train hopping through the country is, without a doubt, the most efficient and enjoyable way to visit Canada.

Down by the Coast

The Historic Properties Wharf presents former shipping warehouses that overlook the harbour and have retained their original architecture, deeming this spot a must-see for history lovers. The historic buildings are now home to the vibrant Harbourside Market, boasting indie boutiques, souvenir shops and lively brewpubs for your enjoyment.

Peggy’s Cove is the perfect, relaxing location after a busy day wandering round the historic sites. Achieve total peace and solitude by visiting this atmospheric bay at sunset and beyond, just you and the old lighthouse overlooking the calm waves. Be sure to visit the memorial marking the tragic plane crash of September 1998, to pay respects to the 229 people who sadly lost their lives.

Up on Land

Halifax Citadel National Historic Site serves as a wonderful demonstration of a nineteenth century British fort, complete with summer displays of interpreters in red British uniforms interacting with visitors and explaining what life was once like at this site. From the hillside, you will be blessed with stunning views of the whole city, harbour and surrounding islands, too.

For something a little different, the port is home to the wonderful Halifax Museum of Natural History, self-described as the perfect introduction to Nova Scotia. It leaves no nature group out, with sections on archaeology, geology, mammals and aquatic life. If you’re a particular fan of shelled creatures, the site prides itself on its most beloved citizen, Gus the Tortoise, who receives more visits a year than any other tourist site!

After all the tiring exploring, head to the Public Gardens for a breath of fresh air. It originates from the Victorian era, so look out for signs of its heritage. Find an isolated spot within this immense two-acre public space with quiet walkways, beautiful flower beds and plenty of picnic spots and catch some time away from the bustling outside atmosphere.

If these relaxing yet fascinating activities appeal to the adventurer within, get planning your Canadian holiday train journey with an essential stop at Halifax for a versatile and eye-opening experience.
