Step into the Sound of Music in Salzburg on a Danube Cruise

ID: 604102

Stopping off in Salzburg on a Danube cruise should be top of the check-list, with all the cultural beauties the city has to offer.

(firmenpresse) - A Danube cruise promises a stunning view of the river that flows through ten countries starting in Germany and leading to Romania, across a total of 1,770 miles. One of the popular stops along the way is in Salzburg, offering the perfect opportunity to explore the city which is the capital of the province.

Old Town

The city extends from the Salzburg Alps, across both banks of the River Salzach. Within the Old Town (or the Altstadt), the narrow medieval streets are scattered with arcaded courtyards, galleries, boutiques and cafés. Passages, called Durchhäuser, lead you through the town starting from Universitätsplatz to Getreidegasse. Here, some old merchant homes date back to the fifteenth century.

There are endless sights that are worth visiting within the Old Town, including the Town Hall (Rathaus) and Old Market (Alter Markt), which is home to a thirteenth-century Court Pharmacy (Hofapotheke) and the seventeenth century St. Florian’s Fountain.

Hohensalzburg Castle

The castle, originally built in 1077, stands tall on the summit of the Mönchsberg. While much of the fortress was rebuilt over time, most of what can be seen today dates back to the early sixteenth century. Notable features of the construction include the arched gateways beneath the seventeenth century Fire Bastion along with the Horse Gate and the courtyard. Within the castle itself, the Princes’ Apartments are decorated in a Late Gothic style, while the Golden Room dazzles with its marble doorways.

Mozart’s Birthplace

Music lovers will be delighted at the opportunity to explore Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthplace, following his footsteps across the city.

Mozart’s mark on Salzburg can be traced through the various attractions dedicated to his career including the museum based in his family home, as well as numerous festivals which celebrate his music. You’ll even catch his songs played as you explore the Salzburg streets, with the melodies that ring out on the glockenspiel on a daily basis.

The Sound of Music Tour

Salzburg is also well-known for being the setting of The Sound of Music. Many of the exterior shots were filmed across the city, constantly drawing visitors who hope to see the sites featured in the film.

Hellbrunn Palace (Schloss Hellbrunn) makes an appearance in The Sound of Music, with the park that is lined by a grand alley of trees and the famous gazebo seen in the film. Similarly, Mirabell Palace (Schloss Mirabell) was an important filming location for its stunning gardens.

The Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg stops across these cultural attractions, immersing visitors in the world of the film whilst exploring the architectural wonders of the city.
